I spent a few days investigating Company 546 and found no photos that would have Ed pictured. These photos were sent to me from the Smithsonian in D.C. They are from the book "Images of America" by Newland. These photos were taken in the Cleaveland Forest in 1933 of CCC workers. They were not listed as being Company 546. I thought they showed the type of work Ed was doing there and a better idea of what the camp looked like.
“They lived in tents, ate off the ground, and most likely bathed in swimming holes”. One account says “ they were so high up in the mountains that many men had nose bleeds”.
Company 546 built the road that now goes through Silverado Canyon in the Santa Ana Mountains.
Each young man was paid a total of twenty-five dollars. The workers were only allowed to keep five dollars of the money. The remaining twenty dollars had to be sent back home to their family. Ed listed his sister Lucille as the recipient of
his money.
